If you’re after stunning beaches and coastline then South Devon is hard, if not impossible to beat! In 2008 Dawlish Warren and 5 of Torbay’s beaches were honoured with a Blue Flag award. With 70 miles of glorious pure sand or sandy shingle coast it’s any sunbathers or water-sport enthusiasts dream.
If you love walking South Devon is the place for you. Venture along the Coastal Path from the Exe Estuary to Wembury and experience ancient walkways along rocky headlands, above sandy beaches and secret coves, past wetland habitats and through pretty fishing villages and harbours.
South Devon is blessed with beautiful rich countryside. Take a wander down green lane to discover the magical landscape of Dartmoor National Park. For anyone who enjoys walking, cycling or horseriding a day out in the wilds of Dartmoor is not to be missed.
Other ways to truly explore the dazzling landscape is by bus, steam train and boat. One of South Devon’s most popular attractions is the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway, where you travel along the spectacular beauty of the English Riviera. Alternatively take a pleasure boat cruise aboard the ‘River Link’ along the River Dart or out to sea.
Located on a long sand spit at the mouth of the River Exe and home to an abundance of species of wildlife is the Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve. Habitats at the Warren include dunes, grassland, ponds, salt marsh and mudflats. It is also the main roost for wildfowl and wading birds of the Exe Estuary.
South Devon is home to a number of beautiful Gardens. Greenway, Agatha Christie’s garden, renowned for rare half-hardy trees and shrubs and native wild flowers. Surrounding the gardens are links to Dart Valley Trail, Galmpton village walk and John Musgrave Heritage Trail.
Plant World, between Torquay and Newton Abbot offers a gorgeous collection of rare and exotic plants from around the world in its 4 acres of landscaped gardens. The gardens have been featured on the BBC’s Gardeners World, ITV’s Gardens for All and Channel 4’s Bloom.
Stroll around the quaint harbour towns such as Paignton and Brixham, enjoy a boat trip along the Exeter Canal, or experience a delicious cream tea at one of South Devon’s many picture postcard villages.
South Devon has an extensive list of fabulous towns and villages, these include Ashburton, Bovey Tracey, Brixham, Bucksfastleigh, Chudsleigh, Dartmouth, Dawlish and Dawlish Warren, Ivybridge, Kingsbridge, Kingsteignton, Modbury, Moretonhampstead, Newton Abbot, Paignton, Plymouth, Salcombe, Teignmouth, Torquay, and Totnes.
The National Trust has more properties in Devon than any other county! These include the beautiful little manor house of Bradley Newton Abbot, Greenway - Agatha Christie's holiday retreat, and Coleton Fishacre that belonged to the impressario Richard D'Oyly Carte.
There are also a number of spectacular English Heritage Castles at Totnes, Dartmouth and Berry Pomeroy. Alternatively visit Powderham Castle for a special historic experience with events, entertainment and shopping on site.
Discover numerous museums including Salcombe’s Martime and Local History Museum, Topsham Museum in Exeter, and Totnes Period Costume Museum.
Finally, no trip to South Devon would be complete without visiting the stunning Exeter Cathedral.
Thrill seekers will love the 65 ft freefall in the exhilarating rides at Crealy Adventure Park in Exeter or the UK's biggest indoor play centre and action packed out door fun at Woodlands Lesiure Park in Dartmouth. You can try your hand at shooting, archery, fishing, paintballing and more at Ashcombe Adventure Centre near Dawlish., or Canoe Adventures offers a fun guided canoe paddle aboard their Voyager 12-seat passage canoes along the River Dart.
Spend fantastic family days out at some of Britain’s best attractions! Paignton Zoo is home to thousands of animals from gigantic elephants to roaring lions and the King of the Jungle, the Gorilla. Just try not to get any of them confused with your own cheeky monkeys!
Visit their sister attraction in Torquay, Living Coasts, the coastal zoo and conservation charity, and discover animals from the coastlines of the world.
For farmland fun pop into the multi award winning Pennywell Farm in Bucksfastleigh. Get up and close with the animals, witness spectacular eagle flying displays and experience slides, go-karts, quad bikes.
