£30m pledged to protect South Devon railway line

The future of the main seafront rail line into South Devon was secured this month after Network Rail pledged to commit over £30 million towards protecting it. It's a route that has existed since 1848, sees almost half a million passengers each year and provides beautiful views of the South Devon coast along its length.

The funding was announced by Patrick Hallgate, western route managing director for Network Rail, who gave details of plans to protect the picturesque railway route at a recent meeting of Torbay Business Forum. He described the main line through Dawlish as one of the top 10 railway routes in the world, and he outlined plans to ensure that the line is properly looked after for the foreseeable future. The sea wall along which the line runs and the cliff tunnels it travels through can take a battering from the sea, so this secured investment will mean the trains keep running on time.

As a great method of transport for those hoping to make the most of a holiday in South Devon, the protection of the seafront railway line is crucial for ensuring that families can get out and explore the best that the Devon coastline has to offer. The £31.5 million investment is sure to be welcomed by all, particularly those looking forward to a fun family holiday in South Devon.
